Policy Administrative Assistant

Sumaiyah Mohamed is the Administrative Assistant at the Washington Innocence Project. She brings a background in legal research, policy analysis, and nonprofit communications to her role, along with a passion for amplifying voices often left out of the justice system.

Sumaiyah earned her B.A. from the University of Washington, where she double majored in Law, Societies & Justice and Political Science and minored in International Studies.

Before joining the Washington Innocence Project, Sumaiyah worked as a legal intern at the Civil Rights Justice Center, where she supported litigation, client engagement, and advocacy for marginalized communities. She also served as an Environmental Politics Research Fellow in the University of Washington’s Political Science Department, where her work focused on international law, human rights, and global governance.

Beyond her legal and academic work, Sumaiyah has contributed to narrative and communications initiatives with Creshendo, a nonprofit dedicated to elevating refugee and migrant narratives through storytelling and strategic advocacy. She is also multilingual, speaking 4 languages, using her language skills to strengthen cross-cultural communication and support inclusive advocacy in her professional and community roles.

Outside of her professional work, Sumaiyah pursues creative outlets including jewelry making, painting, and dance, having spent much of her life classically trained in ballet. She also enjoys the outdoors of the Pacific Northwest, where she can often be found skiing or horseback riding.
